2020 Term 3

  • A Student-led Renaissance Studies Showcase - The confidence to speak in public and engage an audience is of obvious intrinsic value. At their recent showcase, ably facilitated by Amelie and Grace, Year 10 students spoke eloquently and passionately about issues they care about.
  • Blog: Zooming with the Sydney Jewish Museum - For Wenona’s Year 10 History students, visiting the Sydney Jewish Museum via Zoom was a powerful way to learn more about the Shoah (Jewish Holocaust), as Kate describes.
  • Celebrating 100 days of School - As any centenarian can tell you, reaching 100 is a BIG deal! And this week, our Kindergarten and Year 1 students celebrated 100 days of school with a TON of 100-themed activities!
  • Celebrating Global Diversity Week - This week, our Languages Department has been celebrating Global Diversity. Students have created incredible artworks and our Global Diversity Club has created a powerful video to express what diversity means to them.
  • Doing Retreat Days the Year 5 Way - This week, Zumba danced its way to Wenona, with Year 5 throwing in salsa swivels, painting a giant mural, doing an Amazing Race in the park and listening to best-selling author, Nikki Gemmell.
  • English Extension 2: Creativity shines - The HSC English Extension 2 course is hugely challenging, but this year’s students have excelled, as their teacher Ms Lovell said at a recent showcase, which was livestreamed to parents.
  • Farewelling the Class of 2020 - This week, we formally farewelled the Class of 2020, with a Gratitude Morning Tea on Monday, followed by the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony and Prize Giving on Tuesday, which was livestreamed to parents.
  • Forces and the Three Little Pigs - The Big Bad Wolf might have huffed and puffed this week, but Year 2 have mastered the science behind forces, cleverly constructing houses to withstand his might as part of their latest PYP Unit of Inquiry.
  • Hands up for STEM - Dr Thompson’s Year 9 STEM students have been channelling technology to construct bionic hands using Bluetooth, as well as using Augmented Reality to tour the world!
  • Let’s get physical - Last week, Ms McFetridge and Ms Grun’s Year 10 PASS students got physical, when Ali Cavill from Fit Fantastic put them through their paces in our new Cardio Gym in The Athenaeum.
  • Play on Year 1 - Forget hammering saucepans and belting out ‘Happy’ in the shower! Year 1 have made their own musical instruments using recycled objects and micro:bits, before holding a concert at Woodstock.
  • The Cult of Year 10 - Last week, Amelie and Grace in Year 10 facilitated a very lively Renaissances Studies class, with a discussion on what constitutes a cult, leading to the burning question, is Wenona a cult?

 - What’s the point of Geometry, Year 5 asked? Well, just think of all the man-made wonders of the world. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, for example. Or the Eiffel Tower.
  • The Thrills and Spills of Year 9’s PDHPE Day - On Wednesday, Year 9 underwent an action-packed PDHPE Day, including wheelchair basketball, Zumba, workshops to learn about positive self-talk, and a thought-provoking performance on risk taking.
  • Toy Story Wenona-style - Forget Woody and Buzz Lightyear! Kindergarten have been tackling all the big ideas when it comes to toys. History, form, function, sustainability and why toys are still being segregated along gender lines!
  • Visual Arts and Vanitas - Remember the infamous ‘Carpe Diem’ scene in the film Dead Poet’s Society? Well, ‘memento mori’ has been the inspiration for Ms Sinclair’s Year 9 Visual Arts students.
  • Welcome to The Athenaeum - What an exciting start to Semester 2, with our Principal, Dr Scott welcoming staff, students and guests to our new building, The Athenaeum, named after Athena, Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Courage.
  • Wenona goes Deep Blue - We’ve loved National Science Week at Wenona, celebrating this year’s theme of ‘Deep Blue: Innovation for the future of our oceans’ with lots of fun activities.
  • Wenona’s new pool makes a big splash! - It was the moment our Water Polo girls and swimmers have been waiting for (not to mention Director of Sport, Mr Hill and Head of PDHPE, Ms Bauer). The official opening of Wenona’s new pool.
  • Write for Rights - This week, Senior School students from Wenona’s Service Clubs stood up in the amphitheatre and gave short speeches on social issues close to their heart, imploring students to sign their petitions via QR codes.
  • Year 12: The Class with the Midas Touch - And so, it has come to pass. After all their hard work for the HSC Trials, major works, showcases and performances, the process of farewelling Year 12 has begun, starting with ‘A Sprinkle of Gold and Glam’!
  • Year 3 celebrate difference - Celebrations and beliefs span national, geographic and cultural boundaries, and as Year 3 are finding out, they play an important role in bringing us together and creating a sense of belonging.
  • Year 6 create magical moments - In the words of Italian novelist, Cesare Pavese, “We do not remember days, we remember moments.” And Year 6 certainly created some very special moments on their Retreat Days.
  • Year 8 re-enact 1066 - “It was a silent end for a brave and true warrior.” So said the Saxon noblewoman as she killed a Norman knight at The Battle of Hastings this week – bravely re-enacted by Year 8 in the School Hall.
  • Year 9’s Lucky Dip: A Masterclass - Brightly coloured dips make for a fantastic spread, as Ms Jalili’s Year 9 Food Tech students found out this week, with a masterclass in dips to suit every palate.
