A fantastic term of Sport

SportT16

As a busy term of Sport comes to an end, we’d like to celebrate a few recent highlights.

SportT110

The 101st Tildesley Tennis tournament saw two days of great Tennis action, with Wenona’s 20-strong team competing for the Tildesley Shield for 2019. Ten singles players and five Double pairs, competed extremely well to finish 12th overall, with some very close matches and some fantastic sportsmanship.

SportT17

The highlight was undoubtedly Wenona’s Captain of Tennis 2018/19, Ella’s performance. She made it through to Round 16 in Singles, supported by Lucia (Year 11), who progressed to the 3rd round. Sophie (Year 12), Vanessa (Year 10), Sophie (Year 9) and Kate (Year 11) all progressed through to the 2nd round. While Alex (Year 11), Eleanor (Year 11), Fleur (Year 10) and Emma (Year 11) all played well in hard fought matches, but went out in the 1st round.

SportT18

In the Doubles, four of our pairs made it through to the 2nd Round, again all fighting hard in close matches to bow out. They were Sophie (Year 8) and Zoe (Year 8), Ashley (Year 12) and Maddy (Year 11), Grace (Year 11) and Claudia (Year 10), and Claudia (Year 12) and Lucy (Year 11). Meanwhile, Lucy (Year 11) and Natalie (Year 11) lost against tough opponents in the first round.

SportT19

The team was well represented across all year groups, with some Junior players showing promise for future years, and some fantastic support from our enthusiastic line girls, who may also represent Wenona at Tildesley in the future. Congratulations to all the girls who proudly wore the Wenona colours, playing with grace and style. And a fond farewell to our amazing Year 12 cohort of Ella, Ashley, Sophie and Claudia.

SportT15

It was a great honour for the Wenona team to meet Wenona alumna, Mrs Margaret Warden (Ferguson, 1955) at the presentation, who won the Tildesley Singles in 1954 and the Doubles in 1953.

SportT112

Despite the wet and somewhat wintery start to the day, our inaugural House Cross Country Carnival was met with enthusiasm and positivity from the Year 11 and 12 runners. After a few adjustments to the program - due to the rain and a slight change to the course - the Year 7 to 10 girls took to the course with good spirits and a competitive edge! Congratulations to all the girls who represented their respective Houses during the morning for their efforts and enthusiastic participation, and good sportsmanship.

SportT113

Congratulations to Ralston on their victory in the House Championships, closely followed by School House, with Messiter in 3rd place.

We would also like to celebrate the success of some of our teams that have progressed to Grand Finals or in fact, gone on to win their respective competitions.

In the Eastern Suburbs Touch Football competition, we had two teams victorious: Wenona 8 in the Senior K Division and Wenona 15 of the Junior K Division.

SportT115

In the Barker Touch Invitational Competition, Wenona E won the Intermediate B competition.

SportT116

The Sydney Indoor Hockey Association competition played host to several Wenona teams, with the U15C team winning their Grand Final on Wednesday night.

We would also like to wish good luck to all the teams playing in the IGSSA Tennis Grand Finals (Wenona 8, 9, 16, 19, 21 and 22), as well as Water Polo team Wenona 7 who will battle it out in the Eastern Suburbs School Girls Water Polo Grand Final this upcoming Saturday morning.

Finally, a couple of special mentions to Zara (Year 6) who was selected in the NSW CIS Primary School Football Team and Sarah (Year 7) who came 3rd in the U14 1500m and 3rd in the 800m at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships.

SportT117

Wenona also had some fantastic results in the IGSSA Swimming. Captain of Swimming 2018/19, Abigail had this to say about the season:

SportT114

“Swimming this season has been very successful with numerous swimmers breaking swimming records and beating their personal bests. All the girls have put in a tremendous effort, which has definitely paid off. There were 24 girls selected to represent Wenona at the IGGSA Swimming Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. The IGGSA team for 2019 was successful, with Wenona placing 10th overall. Wenona had 11 individual final swims with a collective eight personal best times recorded in these finals.

A special shout out to Isabella (Year 8) who came 1st in the 14 years 50m backstroke final, receiving a Gold medal and automatically progressed through to compete at the CIS Championships. Abigail (Year 12) also qualified to swim at CIS for the 50m Breastroke. The two girls will race on 1-2 May. Isabella (Year 8) and Lily (Year 10) will also compete in the National Age Championships in Adelaide in the holidays from the 15-22 April. We wish these girls the best of luck!
