STEM Learning
Across the globe, skills in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are considered the lifeblood of the future. Already, 75 per cent of the fastest growing industries require STEM knowledge, while innovation and creative problem solving are recognised as key to tackling impending environmental, industrial and medical challenges.
Wenona is committed to engaging students in STEM studies in interesting and motivating ways.
For the past two years, with support from the , Wenona has collaborated with Deakin University on a research project that aims to increase girls’ interest and performance in STEM related subjects.
In 2015, Wenona became the first girls’ school in NSW to offer Engineering Studies as a HSC subject on campus. A year later, we launched the Stage 5 STEM Elective, a two-year course for Years 9 and 10. Designed by staff, the STEM elective uniquely engages students in coding, computing and engineering.
Student-run interest groups including the 'Rocketeers' Space Science Club, the Maker Club, the Car Restoration Club and Years 5 and 6 robotics run regularly. Wenona girls are now taking home prestigious state and national STEM-related awards, and we have become a leading edge STEM educator in Australia. We hope to open a range of tertiary study and employment options to our girls that might have otherwise been lost.
