Year 10 learn about Speedfit

PASS Yr10 News Term 35

Miss Minifie’s Year 10 PASS students have enjoyed exploring different aspects of physical fitness performance and participation, including a recent visit to the innovative Speedfit gym.

It’s all part of the Physical Fitness and Exercise Prescription unit, in which students learn to analyse the contribution of physical fitness to participation and performance, and apply this to the components of fitness. “Through practical application, students measure and evaluate fitness, and design specific training programs based on the principles of training, safety and injury prevention,” explained Miss Minifie.

Guest speaker, Mackenzie Little came to talk to the students about how she trains for her sport of Javelin. Mackenzie is a current student athlete and scholarship holder at Stanford University. She is the NCAA Champion, is ranked 3rd in Australia and 30th in the world, with a personal best of 60.36cm. She was the World Youth Champion in 2013, and holds the current Australian record in the U18 and U20 categories. Mackenzie provided the girls with an insight into the design of her training programs, safety and injury prevention, the purpose of physical fitness measurement, and the positive and negative outcomes of fitness testing. To say that she was inspiring, was an understatement.

Last week, the girls had an excursion to Speedfit in North Sydney, which offers Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) training. An experienced Speedfit instructor explained to the students what Speedfit does, how it works and why so many athletes use it. This provided them with the opportunity to explore unique recreational and sporting experiences to supplement their understanding of the syllabus.
