Kindergarten talk about scientists
The arrival of an axolotl called Miguel was a great time to introduce our Kindergarten students to the magic of science and more specifically, what scientists do for a living.
Miguel the axolotl, also known as a Mexican salamander or Mexican walking fish, was kindly donated to Woodstock by a former student. Since our K-2 students are currently studying Living Things, Miss Richardson’s Kindergarten class have taken a keen interest in Miguel, talking about their observations, asking questions and listening to each other’s ideas.
This included a lively discussion on what they thought Miguel might need each day to survive. Answers included food, a house, cuddles, love and God!
Miss Richardson decided to harness their enthusiasm to talk about science. Many children have no prior exposure or understanding of science before entering Kindergarten, so Miss Richardson began by asking them what they thought a scientist might look like and what they might do. She let the students be as creative as they wished, so as not to limit their thinking. She then asked them to draw a picture of a scientist at work and describe to her what they were doing. The results speak for themselves!
