Awesome Archdale foursome

Debating WEB NEWS TEMPLATE2

At the toss of a coin on Tuesday night, our Year 9 Archdale Debating team, Natalie, Hayden, Lucinda and Chiara were allocated the negative side of the proposition that ‘the government should fund graphic advertisements to discourage meat consumption’. Their opponents, Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College, argued in favour. Wenona’s solid argument won but as team member Chiara explains, the debate was challenging.

“Our principal arguments were about how the proposal fitted with the role of the government and people’s freedom of choice; also that this proposal would see government support an unhealthy and even dangerous diet,” she said.

“Our practical arguments were the risks and ineffectiveness of the model. We aimed to prove the proposal would negatively impact all stakeholders and that the small benefits of the model would be outweighed by the negatives.”

Archdale adjudicators judge teams on a combination of manner and matter, says Debating Coordinator and History Teacher, Miss Charlotte Karsten.

“Presentation and information both score as does how well a team’s substantive case can withstand the opposition’s rebuttal.”

So this Wenona team, which won their division last year, is through to the semi-finals again and this awesome foursome deserves many congratulations.
