Wenona Turns Pink for Breast Cancer Network Australia
Over the past two weeks, Wenona staff and students have come together to raise money for the PLAY4BCNA (Breast Cancer Network Australia) Pink Round.
This year’s Pink Round was a tremendous success, seeing fantastic support from students and staff alike. This important fundraising initiative was spearheaded by PDHPE teacher, Ms Grun, who raised awareness for this cause to honour her mother, who sadly passed away from breast cancer, and all the other people who are affected by this illness.
Pink Round began on Friday 3 May, with bake sales taking place in both the Junior and Senior Schools, and a lunchtime barbeque in the Undercroft for the Senior School. Not even the rainiest of weather could dampen spirits, with a whole host of delicious baked goods and hearty sausage sizzles on offer! Students descended upon the covered area to devour their treats, with all money raised going towards the BCNA.
A week later, on Friday 10 May, the whole school celebrated Pink Round by wearing a ‘touch of pink’, with some staff members even going as far as to (temporarily) dye their hair pink! The weekly Staff Morning Tea was awash with pink decorations and pink buns that were kindly donated by Bakers Delight, Crows Nest, and there was a great buzz around the school, with everyone buying into the cause.
At lunchtime, students and staff headed down to the Big Gym to witness the eagerly anticipated Pink Round Shoot Out, which saw around 30 staff and 30 students go head-to-head in a basketball shooting competition. The student teams featured children from Year 6 up to Senior College, and there were staff teams from the PDHPE and Sport Departments, and the Senior Leadership Team. After two rounds, the PDHPE Department emerged victorious! The shoot-out was a wonderful way to cap off the week, with great competitive spirit on show from both the staff and students, and fantastic support from all who came to watch.
“Reflecting on our fourth annual Pink Round supporting the PLAY4BCNA Campaign by Breast Cancer Network Australia, it has been incredibly special to witness the unity within the Wenona Community. This year marks a milestone as we have successfully engaged students from Kindergarten to Year 12, fostering inclusivity through various activities like bake sales, barbeques, the Staff versus Student Shootout, all while wearing our touches of pink.
The significance of Pink Round varies for everyone, yet its essence lies in amplifying awareness and supporting BCNA's endeavours. Through our collective efforts, we are hoping to grant more precious moments with loved ones or to try to make the challenges faced during these times a little easier.
Pink Round stands as a poignant tribute to those affected by breast cancer, honouring the legacy of those who have passed, the resilience of those currently on their breast cancer journey, and striving to diminish its impact on future generations. Together, Wenona is making a difference,” said Ms Grun, without whom none of this would have been possible.
On top of these fundraising efforts at School, pink swimming caps have also been made available to purchase, .
During these fun activities, the true meaning of Pink Round was never forgotten, and we are thrilled to raise money for such an important initiative. If you wish to donate through Wenona’s PLAY4BCNA page, you can do so .
