Wenona Honours ANZAC

On Tuesday 30 April, the first day of Term 2, our Junior and Senior School students participated in special ANZAC celebrations, to honour the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, past and present.

ANZAC Article 1

In the morning, our Junior and Senior School students held Assemblies with student speeches, prayers, and renditions of the School Hymn. Our Junior School welcomed parents to their Assembly, and they watched on as our younger girls sat respectfully, absorbing the meaning of this important occasion, and understanding its significance for Australians.

In the Senior School, the Cadet catafalque party created a dignified atmosphere, as Year 12 student, Litia, played the Last Post on her lone trumpet. Both Assemblies featured a minute’s silence for participants to reflect and acknowledge those who had fallen before us. Wreaths were then placed at the front of both Assemblies, before Advance Australia Fair was sung by all.

Principal, Dr Scott asked the question, “How many of you would have either a mother or a father, a brother or a sister, an aunt or an uncle who are in the armed services of some description?” With a significant number of hands raised, she then reminded us of the importance of looking back with appreciation, by saying, “It’s very easy when we’re in a country like this, which is an overwhelmingly peaceful country, to take for granted what we have and what other people have done for us, to live the kind of lives that we live.” She ended this message by giving thanks to all present for taking the time to pause and reflect.

After the Senior School Assembly, Student Leaders and Cadets walked to the North Sydney Cenotaph to lay a wreath at the North Sydney War Memorial and conclude what had been a thought-provoking morning.
