Gratitude Amidst Failure

Driving defeat teaches Deputy Head Prefect, Sasha, a profound lesson: gratitude is not dependent on success.

Each week, our student leaders share their insights with their peers in Assembly.

Just the other day, I left Service NSW with my L plates still in hand, after unfortunately failing my driving test. Stomping as loudly as I could all the way back to the car, in a weak attempt to make everyone in the car park feel bad for me, I admit wasn’t one of my most graceful moments. That afternoon, the myriad of support and encouragement from my parents was met largely with disregard and an absence of gratitude. As I began to come to my senses, I remembered the dedication and time my parents had put into teaching me how to drive. Even though I didn’t achieve the desired outcome, their support and time were still invaluable and deserving of full appreciation.

It occurred to me that we tend to feel gratitude only during times of success and that feeling is notably absent during times of failure. The support and love of those around us are often underestimated and only truly appreciated when accomplishments are made.

It’s okay for gratitude to be a constant. Giving thanks, showing love, and appreciating the people around you don’t require accomplishing something beforehand. Gratitude and failure can coexist. It is during times of failure when we need these people the most. The people you surround yourself with provide consolation, compassion, and love – this is so special and should be appreciated, no matter the circumstances.

Take notice of the people who are present in your life right now. Those who cheer you on and support your every move. These people watch on as you dare to dream big, try new things, share moments of happiness and heartbreak, and are with you through success and failure. Their willingness to put their “hands in” to foster a community of kindness, empowerment and resilience allows you to pursue whatever you want – no matter if you face a few setbacks. These support networks are so incredibly special and should always be acknowledged and reflected on with gratitude.

So, this morning, I am grateful to those in my life who have supported me through both success and failure. Without people like you, I would never have the courage to go after what I want. Go through today, this week, and this month, knowing you are loved and there are many people waiting to celebrate your successes and accomplishments. But, these same people will also be there in times of defeat. Know that there will be times of failure. There will be times when you feel like nothing is going your way. But during these times, knowing that there are a multitude of people who are there to support you and put their “hands in” – this is something to be forever grateful for.
