Foundation Day 2023

Celebrating Wenona’s rich history and promising future.

Foundation Day is the biggest event on the Wenona calendar, bringing our community together for an enthusiastic celebration of our history, values, and heritage of shaping strong, independent young women.

The event traces its roots back to 1935 when the School's founder, Miss Edith Hooke, made the journey from her home in Leura to spend the day with her students. Over the years, Foundation Day has evolved and grown, incorporating new traditions and events, while maintaining its core values and purpose.

Today, we rang in Wenona's 137th anniversary and were joined by more than 60 special guests, including members of the Class of 1963 who are marking their 60-year reunion.

A long-time Foundation Day tradition is an inspiring speech by a distinguished Alumna. This year, it was delivered by Hope Feros from the Class of 2018, who shared how the Wenona philosophy of the "Renaissance Woman" has guided her throughout her life, helping her conquer challenges and achieve her goals. "I can honestly tell you that the foundations you are building here at Wenona will set you up for success and allow you to take on any challenge without fear or failure," she said.

Another tradition is the cutting of the cake by the youngest student in the School, symbolising the continuity of Wenona's legacy and its commitment to nurturing the next generation. In 2023, it was performed by Kindergarten student, Olympia, accompanied by her parents, Lorena and Andrew.

The Alumnae Association Spirit Award acknowledges a student who embodies the meaning of our School’s motto Ut Prosim, that I may serve. It particularly references a specific action or deed that would not normally be recognised by an annual School Award. The 2023 recipient is Eleanor (Year 11).

In her speech, Dr Scott acknowledged the exceptional contribution of the School's past principals, including Mrs Denise Thomas, who was interim Principal in 2007 and spent time as a Deputy Principal, Head of History, teacher, Archivist, and author of the School's history.

After the official service, guests enjoyed a formal morning tea in West Commons, providing an opportunity for old friends to reconnect and share memories.

The students tucked into colourful House cupcakes before performing some extraordinarily spirited renditions of ABBA tunes as they competed in the House Choral Festival.
