Ecological Restoration

An environmental service activity has enhanced the biology knowledge, gardening skills and environmental awareness of students in Year 7.

In association with Bushcare, Year 7 has been immersed in a major service project to clear the earth and create a garden near the carpark off Widgiewa Road, in the reserve that surrounds the Northbridge Baths.

Their work will also benefit Sydney Wildlife Rescue, as a number of the species they have planted will serve as future feed for injured animals.

During the process, the students learned practical gardening tips such as correct spacing, root care and watering principles, along with more detailed knowledge about ecological restoration, plant usage, osmosis, and photosynthesis.

"I think the students found it surprisingly interesting ... especially when there was the excitement of uncovering worms, bugs and the occasional spider they disturbed while digging up the earth!" said Director of Community and Service Learning Mrs Kate Seale.
